About a month ago my wife and I had about all we could take. We owe too much money and are getting nowhere paying it off. About 2 years ago I made some poor decisions. The first was taking on a business partner and hiring personnell a little prematurely for my business and getting more office space….all the while I’m working out a real estate flip investment. All seemed to be going well at the time. The property would have had decent profit margin, but the help I received ditched me early in the project and the roof started to leak (shake roof). Anyway, I lost a lot of money…more than a years salary for me. Oh yeah, did I mention my latest stupid decision? The car, it’s every american downfall…the car.
My business partner and I split ways. I sold some stuff and went back to consulting on my own. I’ve been working part time at UPS, and I recently started working for an ecommerce company (3 jobs). Can you believe it? I’m still not getting anywhere. Anyway, I’ve really started listening to Dave Ramsey, the finance guy and am pumped now more than ever to get out of debt and start living a different kind of life! As Dave puts it, to run like a gazelle towards the goal.
While I’ve been working the 3 jobs, my web design consulting business is really doing well and bringing many new projects. We’ve sold the new car and we’re selling a bunch of stuff including our home and we are moving in with the in laws! Funny, the mixed advice that starts coming out of the wood work. It seems everyone is such a great expert in the subject matter. I recognize the caution of living under someone’s roof and the old “in laws” mystery thing and have weighed the options. First, my in laws are great and they really are concerned about our well being and constantly pray for us to have wisdom in all that we do. And being debt free is WISE. They’re not condemning and we really do enjoy spending time with them. Dave Ramsey also has a great quote, which is to “live like noone else, so that later you can live like noone else”.
I’m think about journaling the experience so that others who find themselves in a similar situation as us can take away some bit of wisdom and experience with them, without it coming out of the word work.
